In her first term Jay, who is a Family Court Attorney, is a Co-Chair of the Anti- Bullying Task Force, a collaborative with Erie County Family Court and the greater community to develop strategies to decrease bullying in the schools and community. She also sits on the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative, which is a committee focused on reducing suspensions and decreasing student involvement in the juvenile justice system.  She has been an advocate for the district’s transgender students and worked with the Superintendent on Buffalo’s New Education Bargain, which has resulted in higher graduation rates and a significant increase in schools in good standing.

Jay also helped launch the new North Park Community School where 85% of students live less than 1.5 miles from the school. North Park is open to students, families and the community after school and on weekends to provide a cohesive, supportive and successful school right in the midst of its North Buffalo neighborhood.

“Community Schools are the future of our Buffalo Public School System’s success,” Jay explained.  “I have seen from the first year at North Park that by involving the community in the building where the children learn everyone benefits, especially the students and their families.  I look forward to using this successful model to continue to improve our schools in every neighborhood.”

Jay also was instrumental in bringing stability to the school board that was often fractious in her first year as a member.  “I led the effort to remove racism and wasteful political distractions from the Board of Education that this City had dealt with for far too long.  We were then able to refocus our efforts on the only thing that matters, our children,” Jay said.

Jay said she wants to continue fighting for the quality education of more than 30,000 Buffalo Public School students and their families.

In her video announcement posted to social media posted on January 28th Jay said, “We have so much more work to do which is why I am asking for your vote so that I can continue to fight for the right of your child to a quality public education.”
